What is EVOH?

In the food packaging industry, the use of material compositions that extend shelf life is a key component in ensuring product safety and preserving food taste. In addition, using packaging materials that extend product shelf life can greatly reduce waste of perishable products and provide grocery stores with longer inventory time before products reach consumers. A good way to achieve this is to use packaging materials that reduce the amount of oxygen permeating the plastic, such as EVOH, to combine the material into a multi-layer co-extruded coil structure or extruded laminate structure.

Although traditional thermoplastic resin materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene and HIPS have some degree of inherent barrier properties, they are not generally considered "barrier" materials. Polypropylene, for example, is naturally an excellent moistureproof layer, but does not perform well in terms of oxygen permeability. To protect packaging contents from oxygen and moisture, barrier materials must be incorporated into the composition of the sheet -- this is where materials such as EVOH come in. Greenpak can currently incorporate EVOH into coil structures through extrusion lamination or multi-layer co-extrusion processes.

Through the extrusion lamination process, the prefabricated EVOH film is wound around the heated chromium roller, fed through the gap where the chromium roller intersects the die lip, and then laminated and bonded to the material extruded from the die lip. Using this process, whether PP, PE, HIPS, etc., EVOH films are laminated to the outer surface of the extruded sheet. The structure of EVOH on the surface of monolayer sheet provides sufficient barrier, but the barrier can be significantly improved by the number of layers composed of sheet.
